NEWDELHI: A Bangalore-based surgeon, who left a gauze pack inside an 18-year-oldgirl's nose that started giving off a foul odour, has been asked to pay Rs 1.1lakh as compensation by a consumer court after it found him guilty of "medicalnegligence".

Rejecting theappeal filed by cosmetic surgeon B Sadashiv Murthy, the National ConsumerDisputes Redressal Commission held him guilty as he did not inform Rekha, amanagement student who underwent a nose job, that the gauze was to be removedwithin a day of thesurgery.

"Not removing thegauze pack from the nose cavity inserted by the doctor is deficiency in serviceand negligence. This has caused mental agony to Rekha and her parents," said theCommission bench headed by Justice M B Shah and Member RajyalakshmiRao.

"The anguish of this younggirl who was shunned by her friends, college staff, hostel mates and was told tostay away from them for no fault of hers is agony and insult beyond doubt," saidthe Commission.

Acoording toRekha, her colleagues started distancing themselves from her due to the foulodour emanating from her nose and lodged a complaint with her hostel warden,which resulted in hereviction.
