It may seem like an impossible directive, but at Body and Beyond on Henderson Drive, store owner and staff are striving to make the conflicting elements of biting pain and relaxation converge.

True to its name, the Northwoods-area shop offers more than body art. With a nationally certified massage therapist on board, patrons can come to get inked or get the kinks worked out of stretched or sore canvasses.

Clark, who opened Body and Beyond in March, said the tranquil, New Age vibe was the result of her own uneasiness upon visiting other tattoo shops.

And if Henderson Drive, with its thoroughly suburban temperament seems like an unusual site for a tattoo shop, Clark says that was part of her vision as well.

“I wanted to stay away from the strip,” Clark said as traffic chugged along outside at a much more modest pace than it would on one Lejeune or Marine boulevards, where tattoo shops are concentrated near military bases.

Visitors to the store are greeted by a small zoo of animal figurines — all of which, of course, are for sale. Vaguely exotic aromas permeate the cool interior as water gushes from babbling fountains idly filling a gently rocking water reed.

The Body and Beyond bunch are also out to set their customers at ease about the prices. Clark claims their tats cost half of that at other studios. What’s more, they’ll even pay their customers cab fares.
