London - An increasing number of British men and women over the age of 61 are going in for cosmetic surgery to look better and younger, according to a leading private hospital group.
Cosmetic surgery is no longer seen to be the preserve of those in their 30s or 40s. Latest figures show that there has been a 40 percent growth in operations on people who are over the age of 61. The trend dubbed 'silver surgery' has become an established trend.
‘It's not just about covering up grey hair any more,' Annabel Bentley, private hospital group Bupa's assistant medical director, told The Telegraph.
‘With an ever-ageing population and more emphasis on trying to look best for longer, cosmetic surgery for those in their later years is likely to become more commonplace,' she said.
‘While we welcome the silver surgery generation, we always advise our patients of the increased risk involved when undergoing surgery in later life and ensure that people are equipped to make an informed decision,' she added.
The group reported that the most favourite operations for the above 61 are eyelid reductions, accounting for 38 percent, facelifts, amounting to 28 percent, and breast reduction in women, figuring at eight percent. Tummy tucks, six percent, and liposuction, five percent, closely follow them.
A survey last year showed that cosmetic surgery had lost any stigma. More than 80 percent of women believed that it was ‘perfectly acceptable'.
