Mitch Weber met a doctor at UW Hospital who traveled to China to perform surgeries for free on children who either can't go to school or get jobs because of a facial deformity.
Doctor Ben Marcus chose medicine as a career to change peoples' lives. So when he was recruited to join the Smile China Project. He couldn't pass up the offer to travel thousands of miles away to literally change the lives of children physically, mentally and socially.
Doctor Ben Marcus spends half his time doing cosmetic surgery, the other half doing reconstructive. Last year, he was approached by Dr. Joseph Wong to join his team for a five day mission in december to Shangrao, China. So, most people can't afford to go see the doctor for simple procedures, let alone surgery.
Ben traveled with three other surgeons, four nurses and four translators, all of whom paid there own way there, to operate on children with facial deformities for free. A deformity would cost thousands of dollars to fix. The one thing you can't put a price on is how the surgery can allow them to finally live their lives.
Over the five days, the doctors started at eight in the morning and went almost non-stop until eight each night. The marathon makeovers helped 73 kids.
After that trip, one of the first things he did was sign up to go again, this time to Peru early next year. The hardest part of the mission, he said, was turning children away.
