The study results were reported just a day after the initial results of a U.S. government study showed that Eli Lilly’s drug to treat osteoporosis, Evista, is just as effective as tamoxifen in reducing the risk of invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

The study sponsored by the National Cancer Institute found that both drugs cut breast cancer risk by about 50 percent. But the research showed those taking Evista had 36 percent fewer uterine cancers and 29 percent fewer blood clots than women taking tamoxifen, a drug used to treat and protect women from breast cancer.
