How nice of the BBC to make one a present of the perfect home video, one must have thought. They even managed to edit out most of the disagreeable parts.

Call me prejudiced if you like, but it took a very special reading of history to show the Queen emerging with credit from the aftermath of the death of Diana. It took the absence of anything resembling a dissenting voice, meanwhile, to depict the Commonwealth as vital and relevant in the 21st century. Not once, in two lengthy documentaries, did anyone say: "Hang on a minute."
