The company said it filed the application for its Contour Profile silicone gel breast implant with MemoryGel, a soft filling that better approximates the look and feel of a natural breast than other implants on the market.

Mentor has been waiting for final approval of a round silicone gel implant from the FDA since receiving an "approvable letter" in July. The company said it is still discussing conditions for approval with the FDA, including postmarket patient monitoring.

The FDA banned silicone gel-filled breast implants for cosmetic uses more than 13 years ago after thousands of women complained that silicone from leaky or burst implants made them seriously ill. Last April, the FDA held an advisory panel to consider the reintroduction of the implants for cosmetic uses to the market.
