SALT LAKE CITY A Thai citizen accused of performing surgery on people in their homes and in hotel rooms in Utah pleaded guilty to one count of practicing medicine without a license.

Atiwat Phuwieng was sentenced Friday by 3rd District Judge Robin Reese to three years probation and ordered deported to Thailand. He was also ordered to pay investigative costs.

The court is also issuing a felony warrant for his arrest, which will effectively prohibit him from re-entering the country, according to the FBI.

Phuwieng, 42, was arrested and returned to Utah on Feb. 25 when he tried to enter the U.S., where he had been a fugitive since December 2004. Court documents alleged he performed cosmetic surgery, mostly on Asian immigrants.
