Botox injections and liposuction topped the list of the nearly 11.5 million cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures performed in the United States in 2005, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).
The ASAPS, which has been collecting multi-specialty procedural statistics since 1997, says the overall number of cosmetic procedures has increased 222 percent since the collection of the statistics began. Most popular was Botox injections and the most popular surgical procedure was liposuction; many such procedures performed in Boca Raton and Delray Beach each day.
"The surgical portion of the statistics show interesting results in the breast augmentation and breast lift areas," said Aesthetic Society president Mark L. Jewell, MD. "While some procedures are down, these areas continue to increase; breast augmentation by 9 percent and breast lift by 23 percent."
At the same time, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) said that so-called 'fringe' plastic surgery procedures are more hype than reality.
Pectoral implants, buttock implants, calf augmentation and vaginal rejuvenation, have all been touted in the media recently as the "hot" new procedures taking plastic surgery by storm. According to the ASPS, the reality is quite different from the hype.
"These trendy new procedures that are supposedly all the rage around the country, simply are not being performed in large numbers," said ASPS President Bruce Cunningham, MD. "We haven't seen rampant interest in these procedures in our practices and now the statistics show how few of these procedures are actually being performed -- they are not as popular as they have been portrayed in the media."
