Kangaroo Island Council has begun the $1.4 million re-fit of its offices and library, with the Kingscote Library making its move into the Town Hall this week.

Council chief executive Nick Brown confirmed the re-fit of the library had begun, with extensions planned into the former dental surgery and towards the council chambers to create extra storage.

The library re-fit also will include a "joint front counter" with council staff. The current customer service area in the main council offices will be converted to a meeting room.

Renovations to the Town Hall will be cosmetic, including a new ramp for disability access at the Murray Street entrance and an upgrade to the electrical switchboard.

The banquet room of the town hall will also be renovated to become the chambers for council meetings and will remain a meeting room for the RSL.

The chief executive's current office would become a private meeting room for the planning department and a new chief executive's office created. "Planning applications are sometimes of a sensitive nature so it's important to have a private meeting area," he said.

Council's finance department staff and some of its administration staff have moved to temporary accommodation upstairs at the ANZ building on a corner of Dauncey and Murray Streets.
