Once the domain of the entertainment avant-garde of California or the penthouses of Manhattan, facial rejuvenation, ranging from major surgery to low-cost spa treatments, is available to anyone with the will, the courage and the money.

Doctors, mainly dermatologists and plastic surgeons, offer two routes to youthful appearance: surgery and surface treatments. Every treatment is not for everyone, and it's not just price comparison, doctors say.

When making a decision to have an expensive procedure, shop around. Prices differ. Different doctors have different specialties. Different doctors endorse different skin-care products. Some places may simply feel better to you.

Check a physician's credentials through the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Dermatological Surgeons or the American Academy of Dermatologists.

The speed of your aging depends on your genetics and how well you've treated your skin over the years. If you've spent 20 years smoking, drinking and sunning yourself, by age 50, you need a different procedure than someone who has taken better care of herself.

Most cosmetic treatments don't work alone. Non-surgical treatments, especially, work best in combination; even surgery often works better in combination with non-surgical cosmetic procedures.

So you might need creams or fillers or other treatments to what you want. Keep that in mind when considering price - none of this is covered by medical insurance.

While surgery is the most expensive, for the most part, it won't need to be re-done for five to 10 years, maybe longer. Non-surgical procedures, Dr. Ridenour says, require regular maintenance - visits to the doctor for touch ups, sometimes three to four times a year.

However, you can have things done for a one-time occasion - reunion, wedding, special dinner - that are fast, effective and less expensive, but temporary.
