Although the growth was harmless, some visitors had expressed concern about the fish's appearance and it was removed as a precaution, along with one of its eyes.

A spokeswoman for the museum said some youngsters were getting upset when they saw the goldfish as they thought it must be in distress, although this was not the case.

She said: "One of the goldfish had a cyst on its eye but it wasn't in any distress at all. We sought professional advice and were told the best course of action would be to remove the eye as a precautionary measure.
