Its first appearance has prompted women to run gasping from their mirrors, vowing to box up swimsuits and shorts for merchandising at the next garage sale.
And, following in the grand tradition of the multitude of "cures" for thinning hair and diet plans that claim to have you dropping pounds like a silver maple shedding leaves in October, the quest to eliminate cellulite has become fertile marketing ground. The target is anyone who wants to end the cover-up of what nature has handed them.
Cellulite is a term used to describe dimpling of the skin caused by fat deposits. Although it's medically harmless, it may seem like the end of the world to women who have it. If your man doesn't understand, it's because men really don't get it. It's a biological thing. Most women, thin or overweight, have some cellulite. So what can you do to eliminate or reduce the appearance of those unwanted dimples?
Caveats: Procedure works on a limited number of people -- best results on those younger than 40 with a healthy weight, no stretch marks and minimal skin problems. Not a permanent fix. Dimpling may reoccur as skin ages and tone lessens.
Description: A cocktail of FDA-approved drugs injected into the dimpled areas to break fibrous bands that add to dimpling. Also prompts release of some fat from cells.
Caveats: Although the drugs are FDA approved, they are used off label, which means they have not been approved for use in this manner. The treatment has only been in use in the United States for two years. A FDA-sanctioned study is under way to determine the effectiveness and safety of the procedure.
Description: Aerobic exercise such as walking, biking and swimming in combination with strength training helps to reduce fat and increase lean muscle mass. A diet high in plant food and low in fats helps build healthy, lean bodies.
Caveats: Any diet, nutritional supplement, exercise program or treatment that sounds too good to be true probably is. One place to check this out is at www.quackwatch.com.
Caveats: Although generally safe, any results will be temporary. Make treatments part of a regular routine. Don't expect miracles. In the event of irritation or other problems, consult a physician before continuing.
