The Aug. 23 lecture, What Should I Eat? Women's Nutrition from Apples to Zucchini, was the final part of a summer-long series sponsored by Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston.

It was the first time registered dietitian and nutritionist Emily Wong-Swartz had the chance to talk about diet. Her focus was on how different foods interact with health conditions unique to or more prevalent in women, such as anemia, breast cancer, osteoporosis and obesity.

Wong-Swartz reminded the audience that women of all ages need calcium to avoid osteoporosis and that women, particularly premenopausal women, are at risk of anemia because they lose a considerable amount of iron each month during their menstrual period.

This year, the series offered talks on skin care, menopause, breast cancer breakthroughs, hysterectomy insights, women and cardiac health, cosmetic surgery, and nutrition.

Cleveland Clinic Florida will offer free health screenings and discussion on women's cardiovascular health in February. For information, call 800-691-6555.
