17 July 2006 REALITY CHEQUES CASH POURS IN FOR STARS OF TV CRAZE By Julie Mccaffrey And Antonia H... CASH POURS IN FOR STARS OF
Appearing on these programmes is such a nice little earner, they're hard to resist. For instance, supermodel Sophie Anderton will bag £70,000 for taking part in ITV1's Love Island and executives have coughed up £40,000 for Strictly Come Dancing's Brendan Cole.
No wonder some folk can't get enough of living out their lives on the box. Indeed, six of the 11 Love Island castaways - including Lee Otway and Victoria Hervey - have already trousered a tidy sum from reality TV.
With the phenomenon showing no signs of passing its sell-by date, there's an ever-lengthening list of celebs selling their souls on-screen. Here are 10 of the most shameless offenders...
THE glamour model started off with Selling Sex in 2000 but bigger earners were shows about herself such as Jordan: You Don't Even Know Me. When she met Peter Andre in I'm A Celebrity... she doubled her earnings. ITV's When Jordan Met Peter and Jordan And Peter Laid Bare earned her a million, as book sales and mag deals.
The busy 25-year-old entrepreneur has since appeared in Back to Reality, What Jade Did Next, Celebrity Driving School, Hell's Kitchen, Jade's Salon and Celebrity Wife Swap. Phew!
THE woman who made her name by allegedly bedding Becks proved where there's muck there's brass on The Farm for Five. C4's Extreme Celebrity Detox was another shot in the arm and Love Island continued her romance with the small screen which saw the 29-year-old hitting all the wrong notes on X Factor: Battle Of The Stars this May.
THE 32FF glamour model, 27, kicked off her TV career with Essex Wives in 2002. Then came The Games, Celebrities Under Pressure, Back To Reality, Trust Me: I'm A Holiday Rep and Celebrity Big Brother, for which she was reportedly paid £30,000. Her autobiography, Keeping It Real, earned her £1 million.
BRA model Sophie is getting the highest fee for Love Island - £70,000. Her stock shot up after I'm A Celebrity... where she earned £50,000 for eating kangaroo testicles. Her bank balance was already boosted by shows such as Cold Turkey when she quit smoking with Tara Palmer-Tomkinson.
JADE Goody's ex fell for the lucrative allure of shows like Shipwrecked II and Back To Reality. Then came Famous And Frightened, The Farm and Celebrity Wrestling. His fees - from £3,000 to £8,000 - are paltry compared to Jade's but he's now a TV presenter.
IT girl Victoria, 29, hasn't been tempted to get a proper job, despite her dismal performances as a rent-a-celeb on reality TV. So far, she has "starred" in The Farm, Drop The Celebrity and is now on Love Island.
THE camp crimper, 37, stunned audiences when he first appeared in C4's The Salon in 2003. Then came Back To Reality, Drop The Celebrity, I'm Famous And Frightened - and a bum lift on Cosmetic Surgery... Live. He even managed to land a lucrative contract to front shampoo ads.
