Researchers in a newly published University of Utah study say driving tests show driving is impaired as much by using hand-held or hands-free cell phones as by being drunk.
In the psychologists' study, 40 participants ``drove'' in a simulator four times, once each while: undistracted, using a hand-held cell phone, using a hands-free cell phone and intoxicated at the minimum standard for drunken driving at the 0.08 percent blood-alcohol level.
Use of hand-held and hands-free cell phones impaired driving comparably. They also impaired driving comparably to being drunk, the researchers said.
Researchers at the Pain Genetics Lab at McGill University in Montreal found that mice that were familiarized with each other by being housed together were more sensitive to pain if they had seen one another in pain than if they had not.
The results show an ``emotional contagion'' between animals, researchers said, shedding light on how social factors play a role in pain management.
In a free seminar presented by Aultman Hospital, Dr. Steven Carp, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon, will present the latest cosmetic surgery options.
