The head of a group of plastic surgeons believes it is highly unlikely any of them would have privately imported a contaminated medicine made from stolen body parts.

The Ministry of Health has sent letters to 90 doctors around the country after fears contaminated batches of the product AlloDerm made it to Australia.

Certain batches of the product are subject to a recall from the US Food and Drug Administration after they were found to contain tissue from body parts stolen from funeral homes in New York.

President of the New Zealand Foundation for Cosmetic Plastic Surgery, Tristan de Chalain, says AlloDerm is a brilliant product, which he has used in reconstructive surgery. But he says he is confident none of the infected batches made it to New Zealand.

De Chalain says surgeons are likely to continue to have confidence in this product, as this is a one-off incident which AlloDerm's manufacturers were powerless to prevent.
