There's real coolness developing between the Simpson sisters because Ashlee, right, appears to be morphing into Jessica's image, using plastic surgery and clothes to appear like Jess's clone.
The situation's been aggravated by their manager dad, Joe Simpson, who's especially pushing Ashlee's career. His excuse: "I want to bring her up to the same dollar-earning potential as Jessica." That means movie roles, fashion and cosmetic lines as well as more singing engagements. Jessica denies she's jealous of Ashlee or fearful of being outshone, but friends report they now rarely spend time together.
Angelina Jolie is not happy about new dad Brad Pitt's decision to take helicopter flying instruction, much preferring him to stay with fixed-wing flying like her. But Pitt's disregarding her warnings that choppers are more dangerous and has booked a series of 12 lessons with a California flight instructor. Meanwhile, they've decided to split their residency between California, France and, probably, Namibia, where the government's so pleased with their decision to buy property (and probably adopt a local child), it's guaranteeing them privacy from paparazzi whenever they return. Their new daughter, Shiloh, is thriving and Pitt's next big hope is for a son. But Jolie's told him: "Wait a minute, I'm getting back to my career, and a third adoption comes before a second pregnancy."
Tom Cruise is stopping fiancee Katie Holmes from sending out pictures of their daughter, Suri, because he's paranoid the child could become a target for kidnappers. Holmes' parents are particularly irritated by Cruise's fears because not even they have a photo of their grandchild. She wanted to follow Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's example and sell the first images of Suri to a magazine, then donate the millions it would have generated to charity, but Cruise nixed the idea.
Despite a damage control appearance on TV claiming her marriage to Kevin Federline is "awesome," Britney Spears is still holding the threat of divorce over her playboy husband's head unless he changes his ways. Meanwhile, Federline's fuming that pregnant Spears hired naval academy graduate and former bar bouncer Perry Taylor, 28, as a bodyguard/nanny to help with baby Sean Preston. Friends confide: "This ultra-fit guy is well capable of kicking chain-smoking, boozing Kevin's flabby butt if he gets obstreperous and Federline knows it; he's full of suspicion this guy could end up as his replacement because Spears already fond of him."
Denise Richards used a TV interview to defend herself against reports she stole Richie Sambora, best friend Heather Locklear's husband. She says they had already broken up when she fell for Sambora, and her own marriage to Charlie Sheen was history. But Richards, who has twice spent European vacations with Sambora, is fearful he could return to Lockyear; she overheard him chatting affectionately by phone with his ex while Richards was in Paris with him. She wants to be the next Mrs. Sambora, but his Bon Jovi bandmates are telling him: "You'd be crazy to jump out of the frying pan into the marital fire so soon."
Sir Paul McCartney's estranged wife Heather Mills is fuming over reports she was a high-class call girl to Arab princes while in her 20s. According to the London press, another one of her clients was arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi, who paid her more than $11,000 for sex. These reports are said to be having a detrimental affect on her $50-million divorce from the billionaire ex-Beatle. Mills also claims she's concerned how such slurs will affect their daughter, Beatrice, as she grows up. After her divorce, she plans to sue newspapers "printing the lies" and persons who "made the allegations for cash payments."
